A bilingual literacy outreach centre run by Collège nordique francophone and the NWT Literacy Council, with support from the GNWT, is now open.

The centre, which officially opened June 12 and is located at Collège nordique francophone’s Yellowknife building, offers literacy support and skills development in English and French, according to a news release from the three organizations issued on its opening day.

“This centre reflects our commitment to making learning accessible to everyone, regardless of their background,” Rosie Benning, the college’s director of training and education, was quoted as saying.

“By joining forces with the NWT Literacy Council, we are creating an inclusive space where individuals can develop their skills and thrive, in both French and English.”

The centre will be jointly run by Collège nordique francophone and the NWT Literacy Council, and the GNWT has provided $400,000 in funding.

When Aurora College closed its community learning centres in 2025, it also pulled funding for the Yellowknife Literacy Outreach Centre it was running with Inclusion NWT. That literacy outreach centre had operated since 1997 and won a Canada’s Premiers 2023 Literacy Award.

Kathryn Barry Paddock, executive director at the NWT Literacy Council, said in the news release the organization looks “forward to the renewal of this valuable program.”

The news release said the new centre will offer family and community literacy programming, workshops on digital, financial and employment skills, tutoring services, and English and French language courses.

Residents can register for programming on Collège nordique francophone’s website.
