Seniors’ group Avens and Harley’s Hardrock Saloon are each staging show and shines in Yellowknife in the coming weeks.

In a press release, Avens said its Father’s Day weekend show and shine runs from 11am-3pm on Saturday, June 20.

Organizers promise “a dazzling array of classic cars from various eras” at the Avens site.

“We’re excited to build upon the incredible momentum and enthusiasm from our inaugural event,” Avens’ Lindsey Dwojak was quoted as saying.

“The response from last year was nothing short of amazing, with families and car lovers coming together to celebrate shared passions.

“We’ve expanded our lineup of classic and modern vehicles, showcasing not only the nostalgia of yesteryear’s craftsmanship but also the innovation of today’s designs.”

Harley’s annual show and shine will take place on Saturday, July 4, filling a stretch of Yellowknife’s 48 Street with music, food and cars.

“This event is growing each and every year in hopes to some day be able to shut down the downtown core, to bring back Raven Mad Days,” organizer Blaine Talbot said in an email to Cabin Radio, referring to a former festival.

Talbot said the show and shine is meant to bring people together during a time when the organizers feel people are increasingly seperated.

“We would like to give every citizen of Yellowknife and beyond the opportunity to come down and enjoy an afternoon with us,” said Talbot.

“It doesn’t matter your age, race, status, religion or what you identify as, everyone is more than welcome to attend.”

The event starts at 12pm on July 4 and will close 48 Street from 50 Avenue to the sky bridge. Residents can expect live music, street food vendors, cars, trucks, motorcycles and temporary tattoos.

There will be a prize for the best in show and a raffle for prizes donated by local businesses.

Talbot said any earnings from this year’s festival will be donated to the NWT SPCA and Inclusion NWT.
