As a warm week develops across the NWT, the territory’s wildfire agency reported nine new fires on Wednesday while Parks Canada is tackling a fire north of Highway 5.

NWT Fire said crews were working on a new fire in the Martin Hills west of Fort Simpson, another north of Nahanni Butte, and one southeast of Buffalo Junction in the South Slave.

Other new fires are being monitored east of Inuvik – where a fire technician is heading out to assess the situation – as well as northeast and southwest of Wrigley. A fire near Edzo has already been called out.

A fire near Cassidy Point north of Yellowknife, started by an ATV, is still being worked on but remains small in size.

Parks Canada separately said its crews are working on a fire 20 km north of Highway 5 inside the park, well to the west of Fort Smith. Fort Smith residents and drivers in the area may see smoke.

The fire is considered lightning-caused and out of control.

“This fire is currently being actioned by two helicopters performing bucketing operations, supported by GNWT and Parks Canada fire crews. Air tanker assistance is being deployed from Alberta,” Parks Canada stated.
