The NWT Power Corporation says lightning near a hydro plant was the cause of a citywide outage that occurred shortly before 10:45am on Thursday.
“We are aware of the outage in Yellowknife, restoration is underway,” NTPC stated just after power blinked out across the city.
“The outage was caused by lightning activity near the Bluefish hydro site.”
Bluefish is one of two hydro systems that supply power to Yellowknife, alongside the Snare chain of hydro dams.
Diesel generators provide backup, but they aren’t always able to kick in immediately.
By 11:10am, power had begun returning to some parts of the city. A few minutes later, NTPC said service had been fully restored.
