The City of Yellowknife says the “prompt actions” of people living in a 47 Street home helped avoid any injuries when the house caught fire early on Sunday.

Crews responded within six minutes of the early morning call, the city said in a news release on Monday. The fire was contained to the home. Its cause is still under investigation.

The city praised the speedy exit of those inside the home but added a broader note of caution for residents.

“As this was the second residential structure fire in recent weeks, YKFD is reminding residents that working smoke alarms save lives,” the fire division stated.

“Test smoke alarms regularly, replace batteries as needed, and ensure alarms are installed on every level of the home and outside all sleeping areas.”
