Hot and dry conditions trigger fire ban for Yellowknife

The City of Yellowknife has issued a fire ban for open-air burning within city limits effective Monday at 12pm, citing ongoing hot and dry conditions.

The city said the fire ban applies to burning within approved fire pits but not to CSA-approved propane appliances used for cooking and heating like camp stoves and enclosed barbecues.

“Residents are asked to respect the fire ban and exercise caution when using all permitted outdoor appliances,” the city said in a Monday news release.

The city said the fire ban will be in effect until further notice.

The fire ban comes after Yellowknife welcomed evacuees from Fort Simpson on June 28. That evacuation order was issued because of a wildfire burning seven kilometres from the village and the potential for a change in winds to blow the fire toward Fort Simpson.

Wrigley was evacuated less than 24 hours later, to Fort Smith, because of a wildfire burning 12 kilometres northeast of the community.
