The organization planning to build the first territorial public art gallery says becoming an independent charity is a “milestone” for its work.
“Independent charitable status marks a new stage for the organization as it advances plans for a public art gallery and community space in Yellowknife,” the NWT Art Centre Initiative said in a news release this week.
The change in organizational status does not mean the initiative is changing its mission, it said. The NWT Art Centre Initiative said it is still committed to collaborating with “northern artists, leaders, communities, and supporters to create a space to share NWT art with each other and with the world.”
The announcement comes almost a month after the GNWT announced it had signed an agreement with the NWT Art Centre Initiative to support a centre built on the former Akaitcho Hall site.
The organization said it was previously a partnership with the national charity MakeWay, which the initiative said provided organizational supports, coaching and other services.
The NWT Art Centre Initiative is also looking for board members and donations to support its work, which can be made through Canada Helps.
