Fort Simpson’s Finno Celestin launched a taxi service on Monday to support residents who need a lift in town.

The service, Whiterock Wellness Solutions, is open Monday to Friday from 7am to midnight, then on weekends from 10am to 2am, Celestin said – with some schedule flexibility.

“People can always give it a try,” said Celestin. “The other day, I gave a ride to someone at 1:30am. So if I’m available, I’ll do it.”

Celestin will offer taxi services within Fort Simpson and is willing to negotiate day trips to Jean Marie River or overnight trips farther afield to Fort Liard, Hay River and even Yellowknife.

“It was a need in the community,” said Celestin. “I needed the service once in a while and it wasn’t available, so I just figured it’s something that is necessary.”

Other northern communities have had to contend with a lack of local taxis. In small towns and villages, companies have found themselves struggling to operate around the clock to meet demand while recruiting enough people to drive.

Whiterock Wellness Solutions will offer travel between communities “on request” and price will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

According to the business’s Facebook page, local fares are priced at:

  • On the island: $10
  • From/to hill: $20
  • From/to hill round trip: $40
  • From/to airport: $40
  • Multiple stops: $60
  • Multiple stops on the island: $40

Residents who want to book the service can call 514-715-2899. Another service, Double A Ventures, has also offered taxi service in Fort Simpson.
