The charity United Way NWT is launching a new fund that’ll provide almost $600,000 to “address the continued impacts of last summer’s wildfire season.”
First Nations governments, charities, non-profits and municipalities can access the cash being offered from the Emergency Recovery Fund. Applications are accepted until the money is gone.
Organizations can use some of the money to recover costs they incurred during 2023’s wildfires and evacuations, United Way NWT said in a news release. Groups can also apply to fund projects that:
- allow the rebuilding of community infrastructure;
- provide direct aid to individuals who continue to experience the impacts of wildfires;
- develop capacity to better respond to future emergencies; or
- address gaps not covered by existing government support.
Matthew Spence, chair of United Way NWT’s emergency management committee, said more than $2.3 million was given out last year but “there is still a need to further support affected communities in their ongoing recovery and rebuilding efforts.”
