With Fort Simpson soon entering its third week since evacuating because of a wildfire burning near the community, the Dene Nation has postponed its annual national assembly.

Originally scheduled for August 11-13 in Fort Simpson, the Dene Nation announced on Friday its national assembly will now take place from September 22-24 in the same location.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding as we support our relatives affected by this natural disaster,” the Dene Nation said in a press release.

While Fort Simpson had received about 25 mm of recent rain according to a Thursday NWT Fire update, Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation Chief Kele Antoine said it could be at least another week until residents can return to Fort Simpson.

Last year’s assembly in Fort Good Hope was also postponed to allow the organization to support NWT communities affected by wildfires. Fort Providence and Whatì were evacuated in 2025.

The Dene Nation said further details about this year’s agenda and registration will be available in the coming weeks.
