Police say they have charged four people after finding fentanyl and crack cocaine during a search of a Hay River home.

In a Thursday news release, RCMP said the discovery came during a raid carried out on Friday last week that focused on a home “believed to be involved in the selling of stolen property.”

Once inside, RCMP said officers found a “large quantity of suspected fentanyl and crack cocaine consistent with trafficking,” alongside various items of stolen property.

Police said two people, 31-year-old Markara Bun and 38-year-old Savy You of Ontario, each face charges of drug possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Bun, You and two others are also charged with possession of property obtained by crime.

Territorial officials have expressed growing concern at the prevalence of fentanyl in the NWT amid a series of drug poisoning deaths, with Hay River at the apparent front line.

The community is trying to come up with fresh approaches to help residents cope with the evolving drug trade and its consequences.

On Thursday, the Town of Hay River said a healthy communities committee had met last week to begin developing a strategy “toward identifying and progressing social, health, economic and other opportunities through measurable short and long-term objectives.”

Residents and organizations will be invited to “raise awareness of current issues and provide suggestions for improving the health of the community” in the months ahead, the town stated on Facebook.
