RCMP said they have arrested a Fort Smith man after receiving reports he allegedly assaulted a security guard at a local hotel and was attempting to break into a house.
In a Thursday news release, police said during his arrest, the man injured two RCMP officers and attempted to take one of the officer’s guns.
RCMP said the alleged incidents took place in the early hours of July 31. The security guard escaped unharmed, police said.
Police charged Kelly Canadian with disarming a police officer, assaulting a police officer, uttering threats, resisting arrest, mischief under $5000, breaking and entering, and assault with a weapon.
Canadian appeared in court for a bail hearing and was remanded into custody, the RCMP said. The news release did not indicate when Canadian would next appear in court.

The RCMP said 50 assaults on NWT RCMP officers have been recorded in 2026 so far.
