New deputy ministers have been appointed at the NWT’s Department of Education, Culture and Employment and the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs.

Premier RJ Simpson announced the appointments in a Thursday news release. Deputy ministers are the non-elected heads of NWT government departments.

James Fulford becomes ECE’s deputy minister. Gary Brennan is the new deputy minister of Maca.

“These appointments mark an exciting new chapter for the Northwest Territories as we strive towards a future that promises greater opportunities and improved well-being and safety for our residents,” Simpson was quoted as saying.

Fulford has more than 23 years’ senior management experience at the NWT government and most recently served as assistant deputy minister of Housing NWT, the territory’s news release stated.

John MacDonald, the previous deputy minister of ECE, was appointed secretary to cabinet and deputy minister of the Department of Executive and Indigenous Affairs earlier this year.

The press release stated Brennan has worked with the territorial government since 2007 and most recently served as an assistant deputy minister of regional operations for the Department of Infrastructure.

Brennan replaces Laura Gareau, who the GNWT said is retiring next month after nearly 22 years of public service.

Both appointments take effect on April 1.

“I congratulate Mr Fulford and Mr Brennan on their appointments as deputy ministers,” Simpson said in a statement. “Their extensive experience, proven leadership skills, and commitment to the people of the Northwest Territories make them well-suited to these important roles.”
