The NWT’s top RCMP officer is leaving after a year and a half in the role to lead the police service in Timmins, according to reports in Ontario.
Chief Supt Syd Lecky arrived in the territory from Kamloops in the fall of 2022.
Now, he’s reportedly moving to Ontario to become chief of police for the Timmins Police Service effective May 15.
No such move had been announced by RCMP in the NWT, but multiple news outlets in Ontario reported this week that Lecky had been appointed in Timmins.
Lecky’s “extensive experience and commitment to community policing will greatly benefit the Timmins Police Service and the residents we serve,” the chair of the Timmins Police Services Board was quoted as saying.
Lecky has so far held one major news conference while leading RCMP in the NWT, focusing on issues like the disappearance of Frank Gruben and the introduction of a new drugs strategy in the North.
NWT RCMP have been approached for comment.
The territory’s MLAs recently voted to make public safety a top priority for Premier RJ Simpson’s new cabinet.
The premier said last month he had been “lobbying my fellow MLAs to make crime prevention and law enforcement a priority,” and had been meeting regularly with Lecky in his role as justice minister.
