Hay River residents are now banned from starting outdoor fires other than those contained in an approved fire pit.

The town made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon, a day after South Slave neighbour Fort Smith took the same action.

“Due to dry conditions around town and the current unknown risk rating, the Town of Hay River has issued a partial fire ban. This will revoke any burning or burn permits other than in an approved fire pit,” the town stated.

The South Slave is in an extended and severe drought with no sign of relief and no significant rain in the forecast.

Elsewhere in the NWT, Fort Simpson advised residents earlier in April to avoid starting “any outdoor fires if possible,” but the village has yet to announce a formal fire ban.
