The new president of YWCA NWT is the territory’s former health minister, Julie Green, the organization said on Monday.

Green fills a role previously occupied by Kate Reid, who has since joined the legislature herself as the MLA for Great Slave.

After two terms as Yellowknife Centre MLA, including three years as health minister, Green did not seek re-election last fall.

She is returning to YWCA NWT having first served on its board two decades ago, the organization said in a news release, including one term as president. She was a staff member at YWCA NWT from 2009 to 2015.

“I wanted to rejoin the YWCA NWT board because I believe in the good work they do to improve the lives of children, women and families, whether by providing shelter from intimate partner violence, transitional housing, after-school programming and empowerment groups for children,” Green was quoted as saying.

“This is a time a of growth for YWCA NWT with the opening of Gotı̨lı Kǫ̀, the new family housing building, and I am looking forward to being part of it.”

YWCA NWT says it serves hundreds of women and families across the territory. Green will lead its seven-member board.
