Gerald Enns is not impressed by a pile of garbage he spotted on the Great Slave Lake ice near Yellowknife’s Mosher Island.

Photos taken by Enns show a couch, tent, bottles and cans, with nobody in sight. As the ice starts to thaw, he’s concerned that the items have not been removed.

“It’s just upsetting to see it being abandoned that way,” he said, adding he hopes whoever owns the objects has a plan to remove the pile.

“If it doesn’t get removed … the ice is going to melt and it’s going to fall into the lake,” he said. “That’s just total disrespect of a majestic lake that’s used by so many people, including myself.”

Enns said he’s willing to help, but won’t be able to remove the items on his own. He encouraged those responsible to come forward and reach out to the authorities if they need help.

“It’s hard to imagine that the people who left it in such a state are going to be able to safely retrieve it,” he said, noting approaches to the lake are melting.

“As it warms, it’s going to get more and more difficult to get that stuff out of the ice.”

The NWT’s Department of Environment and Climate Change said land officers have been sent to the area to investigate.
