The NWT government has issued a proposal worth $250,000 for someone to build secure storage for homeless Yellowknife residents’ belongings.
The territory calls the project its Dignity Through Secure Storage Initiative.
“Access to safe, reliable storage is an often overlooked but essential component of supporting individuals who are underhoused,” Housing NWT states in a document soliciting bids from contractors.
“For people experiencing homelessness, personal belongings – such as identification, medications, clothing, and essential documents – represent not only their material assets but also their connection to services, employment, and stability.
“Secure storage protects these critical items from loss, theft, or damage, helping ensure continued access to healthcare, income support, and housing opportunities.”

The territory says building a storage facility will fill a “critical gap” in services.
With a budget of $250,000 and assistance from the GNWT, the successful contractor will be responsible for finding a facility in the downtown core or easily accessible to people who need it. They must also design, deliver and staff the project.
In accompanying procurement documents, the territory indicates a site at the existing day shelter may be available at no cost.
The initial contract is envisaged to run from October 2026 to March 2027. The GNWT has said it hopes the facility can operate around the clock.
