The highways connecting British Columbia and the Northwest Territories are scheduled to reopen at 8am on Monday, May 27.

More than two weeks have passed since Highway 77 in BC and Highway 7 in the NWT were closed because of wildfires in northern BC that prompted the evacuation of Fort Nelson.

On Sunday, Fort Nelson residents were told they can begin returning home on Monday morning.

Drive BC, the province’s traffic service, says Highway 77 “is scheduled to reopen at 8am” on Monday, though its website adds this is subject to change.

Around 9am, the NWT’s Department of Infrastructure announced on Facebook that Highway 7 was open. It said, however, that could change quickly due to wildfires near Highway 77.

Elsewhere, NWT Fire said on Sunday a wildfire between Checkpoint and Fort Simpson has now been brought under control.

The fire hadn’t grown in days but was located quite close to Highway 1 and had the potential, if it expanded, to cut off Fort Simpson and Wrigley.
