Polaris winner Debby Friday joins Cabin Radio’s Elke Sorensen on Monday evening to preview Folk on the Rocks 2024.

Debby began her musical career as a DJ in Montréal. In 2017, she realized she had another calling. Moving to Vancouver, she produced and released her first EP, Bitchpunk, in 2018.

Her debut 2023 LP, Goodluck, won the Polaris Music Prize last year.

To The Dancefloor, Debby’s latest release, is a genre-bending single that demands the listener’s attention. The production features a mesh of genre elements like African drum beats and ghettotech.

“I love hybridity in art. I love it when you take two things that otherwise wouldn’t have been brought together and mix them together in their own unique way,” Debby said.

Debby attributes her genre-bending ways to the age of the internet.

“You can really get access to anything,” she said. “I think the idea of a specific genre is not so useful any more when it comes to describing music.”

Debby’s discography demonstrates her ability to blend vocal style, too. She sings in deep and heavy tones, light and airy tones, and in some songs she’s full-on belting. Debby’s voice was influenced by the punk shows she attended as a younger person, she said, and her favourite singers include “women who use their voice in a powerful way.”

Festival-goers should expect “a really good, crazy time” during her set at Folk on The Rocks, she said.

“I love to take people on a musical journey, so you’re going to come with me. Be prepared to sweat, to scream, to dance.”
