The City of Yellowknife will host a Candidate College on June 4 to teach residents about the responsibilities of being a city councillor and how to run for office.

“Serving on council is an important responsibility, but the realities of the role, the expectations, and the path to getting there are not always clear,” the city said in a release.

The event will cover the municipal election process, eligibility to run for city council, the responsibilities of serving on council, budgeting and bylaws.

“Candidate College is an opportunity to pull back the curtain on local government, help residents better understand the realities of elected office, and support informed participation in the democratic process,” city manager Stephen Van Dine was quoted as saying.

The city said attending the Candidate College does not mean you have to run for office.

Candidate College is set to take place from 6-8pm on June 4 in council chambers at City Hall. The city is asking people to register in advance, but said registration is not required to participate.

Yellowknife’s election is scheduled to take place on October 19. Nominations for council and mayor open September 8.
