Cocaine mixed with fentanyl, meth and other drugs is circulating in Hay River, the NWT’s chief public health officer warned on Wednesday.

Dr Kami Kandola has issued a series of warnings over the past two years about contaminated drugs in various NWT communities.

Wednesday’s advisory called the form of cocaine currently circulating “brown crack,” saying the discovery of meth in contaminated cocaine was new in Hay River.

“Anecdotally, the CPHO has received information that methamphetamines such as crystal meth have been gaining use in the Hay River community,” Dr Kandola’s office wrote.

“This would be the first time that we can confirm through toxicology that crack cocaine is being mixed with methamphetamines.”

The full advisory lists some of the expected consequences of contaminated opioids and how to use naloxone to try to reverse the effects.

The territory said the advisory was precautionary, and there have been “no additional deaths associated with illicit drug contamination reported in the NWT” in the recent past.
