The Northwest Territories’ high school graduates will now receive a diploma featuring three languages: English, French and the Indigenous language of their choice.

The territory officially recognizes nine Indigenous languages.

June 2024 graduates are being asked to select from the territory’s official Indigenous languages for the one they would like on their diploma.

NWT schools “will share more information with families,” the territory stated in a news release.

Education minister Caitlin Cleveland called it a “meaningful step towards reconciliation and language revitalization.”

The GNWT said the move would make the territory’s 11 official languages “more visible in everyday life.”

Former students can request a trilingual diploma through the Student Records office.

“The Department of Education, Culture and Employment is also working to update other departmental certificates and awards to be trilingual,” the GNWT stated.
