The Dene Nation is relocating its annual assembly later this month from wildfire-hit Fort Good Hope to Dettah.
In a Tuesday news release, the body representing northern First Nations said the dates of July 23-25 will remain the same but Dettah’s Chief Drygeese Centre will be the new venue.
“The location of the 54th Dene National Assembly was originally planned to be hosted by the community of Fort Good Hope, but due to the impacts of the recent wildfires in the region, the decision was made by Dene Leadership to relocate,” the Dene Nation stated.
The election of a new Dene national chief will still take place on July 24. Six people are on the ballot.
Fort Good Hope has been under an evacuation order since June 15 over a wildfire that has reached the community boundary.
