The NWT’s minimum wage will increase from $16.05 to $16.70 from September 1, 2024, the territory said in a Wednesday news release.
Since 2023, the GNWT has tied the territory’s minimum wage to a formula based on increases to the consumer price index and the average hourly wage.
The change is a four-percent increase, which the territory said was larger than Yellowknife inflation over the past year.
The last change, a 5.6-percent increase in September 2023, immediately followed a period of higher inflation. The GNWT said some workers had complained in a survey that the 2023 increase was too low, in those circumstances.
The territory, though, said its formula offers “moderate and predictable increases to the minimum wage rate, providing stability and certainty to the territory’s business community while helping residents manage the rising cost of living.”
Across Canada, the minimum wage ranges from $15 in Alberta (and Saskatchewan from October 1) to $17.59 in Yukon and $19 in Nunavut.
