Fort Liard and Nahanni Butte are about to be hit by torrential rain as a storm arcs its way across the southern NWT, forecasters warn.

Environment Canada says heavy rainfall is expected in the two Dehcho communities on Tuesday and Wednesday, “with totals of 40 to 70 mm possible in the heaviest showers.”

“Showers with thunderstorms will move into the Fort Liard region on Tuesday morning. Showers will continue until Wednesday evening. Rainfall intensity will vary,” read a warning issued on Monday afternoon.

Sambaa K’e is also warned to expect significant rain.

“Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible,” the advisory continued.

Forecasts suggest the trigger for the rainfall will be a storm moving up from central and eastern BC.

That storm is forecast to spread out across the Dehcho and South Slave over the coming 48 hours, possibly reaching as far as Yellowknife, though with its effects concentrated in the region of the Liard River.
