Northwest Territories residents with a driver’s licence from Taiwan will now be able to exchange it for a territorial licence.
According to a press release, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vancouver signed an agreement with the NWT’s infrastructure department to mutually recognize each other’s driver’s licences on July 19.
Under the agreement, people with a valid driver’s licence from Taiwan who are an NWT resident may exchange that licence for an NWT Class 5 driver’s licence. Meanwhile, holders of an NWT Class 5 driver’s licence who move to Taiwan may exchange that licence for Taiwan’s Class B driver’s licence.
The press release states the agreement will “greatly enhance the mobility of Taiwanese travellers within the Northwest Territories and steer people-to-people ties between Taiwan and the Northwest Territories to new heights.”
“As a tourist hotspot famed for its aurora borealis, Northwest Territories is home to a thriving hospitality industry that is attracting more and more young adults looking for a unique working holiday and living experience in Canada’s Far North,” it adds.
Taiwan has completed similar agreements with all 10 Canadian provinces. The NWT is the first territory to sign such an agreement.
