The NWT government has asked for feedback over proposed changes to the regulations that govern the territory’s childcare providers.
Summarizing the proposals, the GNWT said the changes would alter the territory’s childcare funding model to provide funding “based on enrollment or space rather than attendance,” while also creating new funding programs.
The proposed legislation would formalize a wage grid for childcare workers alongside qualification standards.
The legislation also seeks to build a federal subsidy – designed to get the NWT to $10-a-day childcare in the coming years – into the operational funding for licensed centre-based programs.
The GNWT said the proposals had been drafted “based on feedback from Indigenous governments, Indigenous organizations, licensed early learning and childcare program operators, and early childhood educators.”
Feedback on the proposals will be taken until September 16 via the GNWT’s website or by email.
A full plain-language summary of what is being proposed is available on the GNWT’s website.
