Three Fort Simpson Housing Authority workers will protest outside the NWT Legislative Assembly on Thursday as their strike action continues.
The Public Service Alliance of Canada said the trio would be joined by “fellow union members and community advocates.”
The protest is timed to coincide with the return of MLAs to the legislature for their fall sitting, which begins at 1:30pm on Thursday. The workers’ protest is scheduled to run from 12pm until 1pm.
Three people are also being inducted into the Order of the NWT at a ceremony in the legislature that is likely to wrap up just as the protest starts.
Strike action at the housing authority began at the start of October over what the PSAC has termed “fair wages and improved services.” The housing authority has not publicly commented.
Staff at the authority maintain around 100 public housing units in Fort Simpson, Jean Marie River, Sambaa K’e, Nahanni Butte and Wrigley.
The PSAC previously said there were eight members in the bargaining unit. In a Wednesday press release, the union said that number was now six.
A union spokesperson said the three striking workers planning to attend the protest will also be introduced during formal legislature proceedings later that afternoon. MLAs traditionally have the right to welcome any visitors in the public gallery.
