A woman facing a second-degree murder charge related to the 2023 death of a man in Fort Providence has been released on bail.

Emma Marie Squirrel, 30, has been in jail since she was arrested on June 12, 2023 and charged with second-degree murder in the death of 48-year-old Gilbert Matto.

RCMP previously reported they had found a man deceased at a home in Fort Providence that evening.

On Monday in NWT Supreme Court, Justice Karin LE Taylor granted Squirrel release from jail while she awaits a jury trial on the charge. A date for the trial has not yet been set.

While on release, Squirrel is required to adhere to court conditions including living at the residence of her surety in Yellowknife and remaining in the residence between 7pm and 7am with few exceptions. A surety is a person who promises to supervise an accused person while they are out on bail and commits to pay money to the court if the accused does not follow bail conditions.

Squirrel must not attend Fort Providence except for court appearances. She must not possess weapons, possess or consume intoxicating substances, or have contact with several people. She must present at the door or answer the phone to allow RCMP or a bail supervisor to monitor compliance with those conditions.

A court order prevents information presented at the bail hearing from being published before trial has concluded. Evidence presented at a preliminary inquiry in the case is also subject to a publication ban.

Squirrel’s lawyer told Cabin Radio she is unable to comment on active cases.
