Aurora College says it is developing seven new trades and apprenticeship programs to be delivered at its Fort Smith campus.

According to a Monday press release, three of the programs are set to accept students in the 2025-26 academic year: fundamentals of mechanics, fundamentals of pipe trades and level one of the automotive service technician apprenticeship.

The other four programs are planned to begin in the 2026-27 academic year.

Those include fundamentals of welding, level two of the automotive service technician apprenticeship, level three of the plumbing apprenticeship and level three of the heavy equipment technician (off road) apprenticeship.

Aurora College said it is also upgrading its existing carpentry, plumber and electrician programs to “equip facilities and students with the latest tools and technology to ensure they receive industry-standard training.”

The college said funding for the new programs and equipment comes from a $625,018 grant from the federal Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy’s Union Training and Innovation Program.

“Aurora College is committed to offering high quality apprenticeship level training so NWT residents can pursue careers in the skilled trades without having to leave the territory,” stated Nora Houlahan, vice-president of education and training at the college.

“Skilled tradespeople are essential for the vibrancy of NWT communities and Aurora College is dedicated to supporting NWT residents in their training journey.”
