The City of Yellowknife says “extinguishing efforts will commence” in an area of its dump on Wednesday as it tries to put out a landfill fire.

What was initially a “subsurface hotspot” in October last year has more recently been termed a landfill fire, necessitating weekend closures at the city’s solid waste facility.

Wednesday’s activity will mark “a significant step towards the full extinguishment of the ongoing subsurface fire at the facility,” the city stated in a news release, without specifying the exact detail of how those extinguishing efforts would differ from work carried out to date.

The affected area of the dump is closed off while that work continues. The remainder of the facility is open for its regular operating hours from Tuesday to Friday each week. Weekend hours won’t resume until the fire is out.

“A temporary closure of the entire facility may be considered at a later date if warranted,” the city stated.

“Clear signage and barriers will mark the restricted area to prevent unauthorized access. Please be aware that there may be increased smoke and a smell emerging from the site of the incident as work is being conducted.”

The city said air quality in the area is being monitored.
