The City of Yellowknife says a landfill fire that burned for months has now been extinguished and dump hours are going back to normal.

The fire began in October last year.

Efforts to tackle it were gradually stepped up in recent months, and the dump began closing on weekends to allow crews to work on it.

On Thursday afternoon, the city said the solid waste facility had resumed its normal hours of operation throughout the week for both residents and contractors.

Those hours are Tuesday to Sunday 11am-4:15pm for residents. For contractors, the hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am-4:15pm and Saturday to Sunday 11am-4:15pm.

“The city will continue regular monitoring as per our usual protocols,” the municipality stated.

Correction: February 14, 2025 – 13:25 MT. The city initially provided incorrect hours in a news release about the dump fully reopening. A correction was provided on Friday and we have updated this article accordingly.
