RCMP have charged an 18-year-old man from Quebec with murder in connection to the death of a 29-year-old man in Fort Good Hope.
Late last month, NWT RCMP said they were investigating a “suspicious sudden death” that occurred in the NWT community on February 24.
In an update on Monday, police said officers had determined the 29-year-old man had died as a result of a homicide. His name has not been made public.
According to Monday’s press release, the NWT Major Crime Unit quickly identified a suspect in the matter.
RCMP officers in Quebec arrested Sasha Bena and charged him with murder in connection to the death. He was brought to Yellowknife for court proceedings.
RCMP allege that Bena, who is from Montreal, was in Fort Good Hope as part of the illicit drug trade.
“This homicide is a difficult reminder of the dangerous and exploitative nature of the illicit drug trade. Drug traffickers are coming to our communities to take advantage of people’s addiction and leave behind nothing but pain and suffering,” stated NWT RCMP Sgt Jason Hurley.
“This arrest should serve as warning to those who would come to the territory to commit violence that the RCMP has a long reach and we are committed to bringing violent criminals to justice.”
RCMP said their investigation is still active and ongoing. Police asked anyone with information about the death or who recognizes Bena from Fort Good Hope or Norman Wells to contact their local RCMP detachment.
