NorthWords NWT and Northern Quill Publishing are staging their first “Flash Fiction” writing contest.
Starting on April 1, the literary non-profit and publishing group are inviting stories on the theme of “edges.”
“Flash fiction means short stories. In this case, we are looking for 1,000-word pieces, which is about three to four pages,” said Northern Quill Publishing co-owner Amber Henry.
Henry said the contest is “a way to promote what we do, and we wanted to find a way to publish people quickly, so we asked NorthWords to help us out.”
NorthWords supports emerging and established writers and authors in the NWT through workshops, mentorships, readings and an annual festival.
Prizes that come with the Flash Fiction contest include NorthWords memberships and cash. Third place gets $100, second place receives $150 and the top prize includes $250 plus the opportunity to have your piece published in Up Here magazine this fall.
Henry said the contest’s theme, edges, “can be defined in a lot of different ways.”
“We’re hoping this is open-ended enough that folks can find their happy place within this theme,” she said.
“We’re looking at maybe pushing physical boundaries or emotional breaking points, maybe the edges of discovery, or the last moment before change.”
To enter the contest, you can submit your 1,000-word piece of fiction any time between April 1 and June 27, 2025.
