Fire at Yellowknife’s Sunridge Apartments

A fire broke out at Yellowknife’s Sunridge Apartments on Thursday afternoon, triggering the closure of 51A Avenue.

For an hour, smoke billowed from what appeared to be a fire on the lower floor of the residential apartment building.

The cause was not immediately clear, nor whether anyone had been hurt.

“Yellowknife RCMP was dispatched to a report of a fire at the Sunridge Apartments at approximately 2:31pm,” police confirmed in a statement, adding that it was “too early” for any more detail about what had taken place.

The City of Yellowknife’s fire division has been approached for comment.

Sunridge Apartments, also known as Sunridge Place, is listed by owner Northview as a 25-unit building. The number of units involved in Thursday’s fire could not be immediately determined.

Smoke poured from a broken window and various doors in the central and right-hand sections of the building, viewed from 51A Avenue, as firefighters made their way inside. Fire crews focused their attention primarily on the bottom-right unit nearest the street.

An evacuation appeared to have taken place, including a brief altercation between a police officer and a woman as she was ushered away from the building.

By 3:45pm, while smoke still seeped from one unit, the situation appeared under far more control. Even so, a section of the street remained blocked off.
