Yellowknife Co-op said on Friday it is acquiring Hay River’s Super A Foods, a major move in the NWT grocery sector that also explains the Co-op’s move to change its name.
The Co-op is holding a special meeting next week to seek approval from its members to become the Lakeshore Co-op – and expand the definition of its trading area to include the South Slave.
Pressed on that change in an interview last week, Co-op board president Mark Needham did not mention the Super A acquisition – saying a non-disclosure agreement prevented him from discussing that kind of deal – but said those proposed changes would “give us more flexibility if we did move into another community.”

On Friday, the Co-op said it expects ownership of Super A to become official on May 15. Super A is one of Hay River’s two main grocers alongside The North West Company.
“We look forward to strengthening both our Co-op and communities within the Northwest Territories. This transition marks an exciting new chapter, one that respects our roots while opening the door to new possibilities,” the Co-op said in a statement.
“We look forward to this new journey together and serving the community of Hay River, NT.”
In a separate statement released at the same time, Super A Foods said it was “taking an exciting step forward by passing our cherished family business” to the Co-op.
“This transition is both a reflection of our history and an opportunity for future growth,” Super A owners John and Tracy Hill stated.
“We are grateful for the many years of support and look forward to seeing the Co-op build on the legacy of community service that has defined Super A Foods.”
