Yellowknife students would have elected Alty, too

Students at a Yellowknife high school almost exactly replicated the adult federal election vote in the Northwest Territories.

Of the 249 students at École St Patrick High School who cast a vote, 53 percent chose Liberal Rebecca Alty – essentially identical to the actual result.

Conservative Kimberly Fairman received 33 percent of the student vote, again mirroring the adult vote.

NDP candidate Kelvin Kotchilea received 10 percent of the student vote while Green candidate Rainbow Eyes received four percent, a slight increase for Rainbow Eyes and decrease for Kotchilea on the real result.

Student Vote is an exercise held across Canada. This year, 5,900 schools recorded more than 900,000 votes across all 343 electoral districts.

As a whole, the students of Canada would have elected a Conservative minority government.

The students gave the Conservatives 165 seats with 36.4 percent of the vote, followed by the Liberals with 145 seats and 31.7 percent.

The NDP and Greens each outperformed their real-life vote share, earning 14.5 percent (13 seats) and 7.5 percent (two seats) respectively from the students. The Bloc Quebecois received 18 seats with a 2.1-percent vote share.

St Pat’s Grade 10 student Dylan Applejohn is an example of a student who said they leaned Conservative in this election.

“If I were to vote, I would prioritize leadership not only on the national level but also territorially,” Applejohn told Cabin Radio last week.

“I believe the person with the most experience, and who’s most able to represent not just Yellowknife but the communities as a whole, would definitely be Kimberly Fairman for the Conservatives.”
