We stationed a reporter outside Yellowknife’s new $72-million aquatic centre on its opening day. The verdict from its first users? “Beautiful.”

That word came up time and again as we surveyed people leaving the facility.

Spend a few minutes listening to these reactions to get a sense of the impression the aquatic centre is leaving on its first guests.

Cabin Radio’s Jasmine Nasogaluak speaks with aquatic centre visitors on day one.

“I think my favourite part is how bright it is,” said one resident. “It just looks gorgeous … it’s a stunningly beautiful design.”

The presence of more, wider lanes also received attention from visitors we spoke with, as did the steam room and hot tub.

“My grandkids, they’ll love the water slide and the spray park area, so it’s got all the features families would love to have – and even seniors like myself,” said another guest.

“I’m back tomorrow. Got my pass already.”
