The NWT’s health authority has signed a new contract with an expanded consortium of northern firms to run the territory’s air ambulance service.

Access Air Ambulance already held the contract as a partnership between Air Tindi and Advanced Medical Solutions.

The renewed 10-year contract now includes the Tłı̨chǫ Investment Corporation, Det’on Cho Group of Companies and Aklak Air in that joint venture.

The contract’s value was not publicized in a Wednesday announcement.

On average, more than 1,600 medevacs are needed throughout the territory each year. Many of the NWT’s small communities lack sophisticated healthcare or roads to other places with better care.

The territory’s health authority said the contract was awarded after a “comprehensive request for proposals process” and Access Air Ambulance had “committed to achieving substantial levels of NWT content” in terms of employment.

Air Tindi president Chris Reynolds was quoted as saying the addition of the Tłı̨chǫ Investment Corporation, Det’on Cho and Aklak Air “exemplifies Indigenous collaboration, operational excellence, and a shared focus on community-centred care for every resident of the Northwest Territories.”
