A wildfire that briefly triggered an evacuation alert in Fort Smith on Saturday has now been declared under control.
“This means this fire is not expected to grow beyond its current boundaries,” NWT Fire said on Sunday evening, praising a “strong, coordinated effort by the Town of Fort Smith and wildfire personnel.”
The town cancelled its evacuation alert on Saturday night, moving back down to evacuation notice. Some mop-up work at the fire is ongoing.
Fort Smith’s protective services division thanked contractors “TDC, Blades Construction, Fort Smith Construction, Berthiaume Arboriculture and others” for their assistance.
On Monday morning, come back to this website for an article exploring in more detail the efforts taking place to improve coordination between different firefighting agencies in the territory.
Later that afternoon, NWT Fire is expected to deliver its 2025 season outlook.
Fire operations manager Richard Olsen and wildfire prevention and mitigation manager Mike Westwick will give reporters a briefing on the NWT’s “wildfire outlook, forecast conditions and preparedness” for the summer ahead.
While that briefing won’t be carried live by Cabin Radio, we’ll bring you the full detail as soon as we have it.
