An Asian-inspired fast food restaurant is set to open inside uptown Yellowknife’s Center Ice Plaza next month.
Wok Box, operating in more than 60 locations in Canada, will launch its first franchise store in the NWT.
Shez Khan, a co-owner of the recently opened Flamecraft restaurant, is one of the Yellowknife Wok Box franchise operators.
According to Khan, the city lacked Asian quick-service restaurants – chains like Edo Japan and Panda Express, commonly found in southern cities.
“At Flamecraft, we have experienced a high footfall of Asian tourists, especially during the Aurora season. We even managed to survive the dead of winter because of the tourists,” he told Cabin Radio, citing that as the inspiration behind introducing a quick and convenient alternative for people on the go.
Khan noted he has heard success stories about Wok Box in other comparatively remote communities, with examples including Edson and Fort McMurray in Alberta, Moose Jaw in Saskatchewan, and Happy Valley-Goose Bay in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Noodle and rice boxes, wings, poutine, soups, desserts and hot school lunches are part of Wok Box’s menu. As per the chain’s website, dishes are influenced by 10 different Asian countries.
The restaurant in Yellowknife is currently under construction. Its precise opening date and hours of operation are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
