The Crown has stayed a murder charge against a woman related to a 2023 death in Fort Providence.
Emma Marie Squirrel, 30, was arrested on June 12, 2023 and charged with second-degree murder in the death of 48-year-old Gilbert Matto.
RCMP previously reported they had found a man deceased at a home in Fort Providence that evening.
Squirrel was released on bail late last year while she awaited a jury trial on the charge.
The Crown then stayed proceedings against Squirrel on December 20, 2024.
In a statement, Nathalie Houle, a spokesperson for the Public Prosecution of Canada, said the prosecution service “has an obligation to continually assess its cases at every stage to ensure that it continues to meet the standard for prosecution.”
“In this case, the Crown determined that the criteria was no longer met and a stay of proceedings was entered,” Houle wrote.
The prosecution service did not provide further information about why the case did not meet the standard for prosecution.
Squirrel’s lawyer did not return Cabin Radio’s request for comment.
