Speaker of the House Shane Thompson has announced this year’s mace tour, in which the legislature’s ceremonial mace is taken around the NWT to connect communities and share its history.
The mace’s design represents the culture and history of every community in the territory.
It features northern elements, beadwork, quillwork, metalwork, painting, carving, and pebbles from each of the 33 communities within the NWT.
This month, the mace will tour Kakisa, Enterprise and Fort Providence.
This tour also connects the Legislative Assembly and elected officials with NWT communities, the legislature stated in a news release, and provides an opportunity to speak with residents about the role of consensus government and the Legislative Assembly in the North.
The tour schedule is as follows:
June 16: The mace will be at Kakisa Lake School from 1:30-3pm, then at Enterprise Community Hall from 5-6:30pm. Snacks and refreshments will be provided at both events.
June 17: The Mace will be at Deh Gah Elementary and Secondary School in Fort Providence from 10:30am-12:30pm. Lunch will be provided.
