The NWT government has amalgamated its various departmental websites into a new portal – GNWT.ca – saying it will help make information and services more accessible for residents.
The site is now organized by “topics, themes and tasks” instead of departments.
“This has been the direction for governments and large organizations for a long time,” said Sean Feretycki, the GNWT’s strategic lead for communications operations, during a briefing.
Feretycki said residents had told the GNWT its existing gov.nt.ca websites were less helpful than they could be, with users having to visit “six or seven or 10 places” to get information. Those residents would have to already know which departments were responsible for that information, he added.
The new website organizes GNWT services under 15 topics like public safety, environment and energy, and sports, recreation and tourism.

Old pages with similar topics are now grouped together as one page to remove duplicate information. Pages also suggest related information in a sidebar.
Sites with the gov.nt.ca domain will continue to exist but will no longer updated by December, Feretycki said.
He said the development of GNWT.ca began in May 2024 and was completed by contractor Northern Commerce with an original contract price of $885,000.
Feretycki encouraged residents to provide feedback using thumbs up or thumbs down buttons at the bottom of each page.
“We would love to hear, page by page, if what we’ve put together – what we’re showing you, how this content is organized and presented – is helpful to you,” said Feretycki.
