Two schools in Hay River are each receiving $20,000 in library funding from the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation.
In a Wednesday press release, the foundation said it was celebrating Literacy Fund Grant Day by donating to 30 schools around Canada, including the NWT town’s Harry Camsell School and Princess Alexandra School.
“This year’s grant recipients represent a diverse cross-section of communities and backgrounds. We’re proud to partner with an incredible group of schools and educational organizations to help children and educators achieve their literacy goals and get more kids excited about reading,” foundation executive director Rose Lipton was quoted as saying.
The money will help to expand the schools’ library budgets and ensure new books and resources are available to students, the foundation stated.
“Our library has grown sparse over the years and contains primarily books well over 30 years old,” Stephanie Haas, a teacher at Princess Alexandra School, was quoted as saying.

“I know that with the addition of new relevant resources, the library will become a place where children want to be and explore their love of reading.”
The foundation states its goal is to foster a love of reading in students by making contemporary and culturally relevant books more accessible in school libraries.
