Where you can expect to hit highway construction this summer

Planning a road trip? Here’s a full guide to where you can expect to hit construction zones in the NWT during the summer of 2025.

In a Thursday news release, the territorial government announced $43.6 million has been allocated this summer for highway, bridge and culvert planning, design and construction. These projects will cover more than 195 kilometres of highway.

Here’s where you can expect to run into construction this summer, as described by the GNWT.

Highway 1: 

  • Highway surface repairs and chipseal overlay: kms 0-70 and 130-170
  • Rehabilitation work including embankment widening and drainage improvement: kms 234-244 

Highway 3 – Yellowknife Highway:

  • Highway surface repairs and chipseal overlay: kms 100-164

Highway 4 – Ingraham Trail: 

  • Highway repairs and rehabilitation including repairing dips, embankment widening, culvert replacement and chipseal: kms 59-61

Highway 7 – Liard Highway: 

  • Rehabilitation including embankment widening, aggregate production, Right of Way clearing, ditching, culvert replacement, sub-base, base and chipseal: kms 33.75-39. 

Highway 8 – Dempster Highway: 

  • Rehabilitation including embankment widening, aggregate production, culverts extension, replacement, sub-base, and base. Dip repair at Rengleng River crossing: km 178
  • Gravel resurfacing: kms 0-235 
  • Application of calcium chloride: kms 70-272.5

Highway 10 – Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway (ITH):

  • Reconstruction of ITH including washboards and soft shoulder rehabilitation and raising of low-profile sections, kms 27-90, culverts extension, and replacement at various locations. 
  • Gravel resurfacing and application of calcium chloride: kms 0 to 138

Hay River Access Road: 

  • Chipseal overlay: kms 0-11.5

Whatı̀ Access Road: 

  • Rehabilitation work, including embankment widening and culvert replacement: kms 0-12

Liard Access Road:

  • Improvements including resurfacing and chipseal: kms 0-5.3

Various Highways – Bridges and Bridge-Culverts:

  • Redknife River Bridge culvert replacement: km 295.2 (Hwy 1)
  • Bridge culvert replacement: km 526.6 and 543.1 (Hwy 1)
  • Smith Creek Bridge deck repair and ditch grading: km 681.2 (Hwy 1)
  • Jean Marie River Bridge replacement: km 412 (Hwy 1)
  • Deh Cho Bridge annual cleaning and maintenance: km 24.5 (Hwy 3)
