On Saturday, Loblaws stores – including one in Yellowknife – attempted to break the world record for the most wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano cracked simultaneously.
Across Canada, 450 Loblaws stores tried to crack 1,800 wheels of parmesan. Inder’s Your Independent Grocer in Yellowknife contributed six wheels of parmesan – 300 lb of cheese – to that total.
The event took place at 10am on Saturday, where employees and customers – many stunned at the sheer amount of cheese in front of them – witnessed the cheese cracking.
With each wheel weighing 50 lb, cracking all six took a team effort. Any wheels dropped or not successfully cracked could not count toward the final number for Guinness World Records certification.
Yellowknife store owner Inderjit Singh told Cabin Radio he thought Lobaws “might be over” the 1,800-wheel target. Confirmation of whether the record was broken had not arrived as of Monday evening.

Even if Loblaws falls short, it still holds the existing record: 1,209 wheels, set in 2014.
The company says the cheese cracking is to spread awareness that it stocks authentic Parmigiano Reggiano from Italy.
After the wheels were cracked, samples were available to anyone who wanted some.
