The City of Yellowknife is about to collect its new tourist accommodation tax from the municipality’s hotels, Airbnb operators and other providers for the first time.
The four-percent levy on any operating a short-term rental came into effect on April 1.
The first reporting period ends on Monday. This week, the city issued a reminder to operators that they need to submit their reporting and the tax they collected by July 30.
Anyone operating a short-term rental also needs to hold a business licence for the purpose. The city said anyone operating such a rental without a licence or failing to report their revenue for tax purposes “will be subject to penalties and fines.”
