The NWT government says it is raising the territorial minimum wage effective September 1.

Minimum wage will increase from $16.70 to $16.95 per hour, the territory stated in a Thursday press release.

For the past three years, the NWT government has been adjusting minimum wage annually using a formula based on percentage changes in the consumer price index and the average hourly wage from the previous year.

“The new method has ensured moderate and predictable increases to the minimum wage rate, which helps provide stability and certainty for the territory’s business community while helping residents of the NWT keep up with the cost of living.” the press release states.

“This measured approach fosters stability to ultimately build a stronger economy and workforce in the NWT, which is particularly valuable during times of economic uncertainty.”

According to the NWT government, in 2024, Yellowknife’s inflation rate was 1.9 percent, as measured by the consumer price index, compared to 3.3 percent 2023.

From 2023 to 2024, the average hourly wage in the NWT increased by 0.8 percent, resulting in a lower increase to the minimum wage in 2025.
